Diaspora

A very complex painting - an up to date version of 'Origins'.  A brief and simplified description of the painting is as follows. The zebra stripes on all land surfaces represent the fact that animals inhabited the earth long before we did. The aquamarine area at the top of the picture represents the maximum extent of glaciation during the last ice age and the coastline position represents the low sea-level at that time, which made it possible for early humans to migrate across the continents. The 'mother figure' located in Southern Africa represents our 'earth mother' or 'Eve' from whom all humans came. The arrows represent the major human migration routes through and out of Africa. The width of the arrows represents time (1mm to 10,000 years) and the colour reflects how human skin colour changed according to latitude. The sea colours represent water depth. Acrylic on box canvas, 20 x 20 inches. Design extends around all edges so painting does not need framing. Original £900, Limited edition print £55

Two people commented at an exhibition that a lot of my work reminded them of fractal patterns. So, after a bit of research, which was pretty inspirational, this is the result - not a true fractal bit the pattern inspired by one. The design is extended over all of the sides of the box canvas so that framing is not required. Acrylic on box canvas. Image: 20 x 20 inches. Limited edition digital print £45. Original £650

Origins

An important painting for me as a geologist representing the migration of early man out of Tanzania. The zebra striping of Africa represents the richness of animal life at this time compared to the black background of Europe which reflects a relative paucity of life during glacial times. The 'earth mother' figure is based on finds of carved female figures at sites of man's early occupation. In her belly, she carries the Aboriginal symbol for two people (my 'Adam and Eve'). Symbols overlaying the base patterning are the Aboriginal representation of a 'hearth' - places where man may have settled. The sea colours reflect water depth. I recently produced a second version (Diaspora) reflecting more recent research. Acrylic on canvas board, framed in plain black wood. Image: 18 x 14 inches. Limited edition digital print £35. Stranded

Even as a scientist, I have difficulty imagining the scale of 'universe' - is it finite?, are there parallel universes in time?. I represented the whole of everything (i.e. beyond universe) as an ocean with a conceptual beach representing but one universe. I portrayed our solar system as a Nautilus that drifted through time until it became stranded on the time line of our universe. If there are parallel time zones, the Nautilus could drift off to be stranded in a different parallel reality. Acrylic on canvas board, framed in plain black wood. Image: 30 x 20 inches. Gallery 6: Three Dimensional Work

I began painting three dimensional pieces after my Mum started finding small wooden pieces at the end of the monthly antiques market in her local town. At the end of the day, some of the long -unsold or broken stock was posted down a chute into a skip for landfill. Of course, Mums being Mums, she sent me a few pieces and said she was sure I could do something with them. I immediately found that painting on wood was wonderful – such a smooth and often beautifully patterned surface to work on. So, the pieces are sourced by my Mum, mostly from skips and occasionally, charity shops – often abandoned and broken, but with a little TLC, remodelling and decoration, they’re given a whole new lease of life as a small artwork.

This has proved to be an ideal way to keep painting through the frequent orthopaedic surgery I’ve had over the last twelve years. At one stage, I’d had one arm or the other in a sling following surgery for two years out of four! Often I couldn’t commit to the long weeks needed to start and complete a painting, so the three dimensional work could be fitted in as and when I felt able to paint, although eventually, I did produce larger pieces which of course, proved to be even more time consuming than the paintings.

Some of the wood I work with is stunning – like the macassar ebony, while some is awful, but there will be something about the design of the piece that appeals to me. I never forget though that the pieces were originally designed and made by another artist, usually as tourist pieces in the tropics, although sadly they would probably never have received recognition as such. I love the idea of this kind of recycling and creating something beautiful and tactile from a piece destined for disposal. The gallery shows a small selection of the 123 pieces that I have produced since 2006. The rest of 2012 is committed to paintings and commissions, but I intend to produce more 3D work in 2013.

Tags

A series of ten tags of different design which could be worn as pendants, used as light pulls or as key tags depending on your preference. Each tag has taken hours of work, as small pieces are more difficult to paint. Five remaining for sale (poa)

Ancient People

The first 3D piece that I painted. Approximately 10 x 3 x 1.5 inches, acrylic on ebony. Not for sale.

Autumn Leaf I

Approximately 6 x 6 x 1 inches, acrylic on wood. SOLD.

Autumn Leaf II

Approximately 6 x 6 x 1 inches, acrylic on wood. SOLD.

Autumn Leaf III

A very special piece – highly tactile, triple dotted acrylic on olive wood, approximately 16 x 5 x 1 inches. When I was first given this piece, its entire surface was covered in shallow scallop marks, and took 6 weeks to prepare and paint. SOLD.

Autumn Leaf IV

Approximately 6 x 6 x 1 inches, acrylic on wood. SOLD.

Autumn Shades

Approximately 10 x 6 x 1inches, acrylic on macassar ebony. SOLD.

Boris

Approximately 12 x 9 x 9 inches, acrylic on tropical hardwood. The preparation of large tortoise pieces takes up to six weeks, first having to smooth down the entire hardwood surface and then re-carve the markings before painting. The body was given a satin finish and the eyes a gloss finish, making them look more realistic. (see detail in the photograph above). SOLD.

Brown Shades Bowl

Approximately 12 x 8 x 2 inches, acrylic on wood. SOLD.

Butterflies and Dragonflies (candle holder)

This piece came into my possession as a rusted and discarded large candle holder. Approximately 9 x 4 inches, acrylic on steel. SOLD.

Horace

Another very large tortoise (part of a series called Horace, Doris, Boris and Maurice). I’ve included a view of the piece from underneath and the deep grooving that you can see on the underside of the feet covered the entire surface of the tortoise when it came into my possession. I spent almost two months just sanding down the surface damage and re-cutting the shell and skin marks. It took a further 6 weeks to paint the designs on the surface. He became known as ‘Horace the Horrible’ during the process as he was painted entirely while resting in my lap, and those large feet always seemed to be sticking horribly and painfully into my legs – hence the name. Approximately 18 x 12 x 11 inches, acrylic on tropical hardwood. SOLD.

Key Tags Various patterns based natural subjects. £15 each.

 Large Turtle

A very amusing piece that has been constructed out of a coconut shell. The shell on the back can be lifted to reveal a storage space inside. Approximately 9 x 5 x 4 inches, acrylic on coconut shell, painted as a red-eared slider turtle. SOLD.

 Long Bowl

Approximately 18 x 6 x 3 inches, acrylic on wood. SOLD.

Maple Box

Approximately 3 x 3 x 2.5 inches, acrylic on wood. The design incorporates a gap in the painting in the shape of a maple leaf, letting the beauty of the wood shine through. SOLD.

Maple Pot

Approximately 3 inches diameter x 2.5 inches high, acrylic on wood. The design incorporates a gap in the painting in the shape of a maple leaf, letting the beauty of the wood shine through. SOLD.

Mirror Frames, ocean design, fitted with top quality Pilkington mirrors but can also be used as a frame. 7 x 5 inches £90 (two available), 6 x 4 inches £75.

Ornate Frog

Approximately 6 x 3 x 3 inches, acrylic on wood. The double dotted and highly tactile pattern is based on that of a fire-bellied toad. SOLD.

 Pita

This was a commission piece – a very daunting one at that, but one which was fascinating to paint. It came to me as a piece probably of African origin judging by how the wood was stained with boot polish. This was another piece that involved weeks of preparation before even contemplating painting the design. Painting the piece was physically quite difficult because of its size and having to be constantly manipulated into awkward positions. Some of it was even painted while I sat cross-legged on the floor so you might just be able to recognise the acronym that forms the piece’s name!. This piece also has differential vanishing – matte, satin and gloss, to highlight tusks and eyes. Approximately 36 x 18 x 8 inches, acrylic on mixed hardwood. SOLD.

Hongkong Butterflyfish(Chaetodon wiebeli)

Approximately 4 x 3 x 1 inches, acrylic on wood. SOLD

Rhino

Approximately 7 x 2.5 x 4 inches, acrylic on teak. SOLD.

Each frame approximately 6 x 6 inches and contains dries pressed leaves, themselves decorated in shades of brown circular designs. One frame contains turkey oak leaves, the other, beech leaves. Acrylic on wood and leaves. SOLD.

Small Tortoise

Approximately 2 x 1 x 0.5 inches, acrylic on wood. Despite it’s very small size, still a double-dotted design. SOLD.
